A View From The USA’s Northern Neighbor
I live in Canada, about two and a half hours drive north of Seattle. The USA was founded as an independent nation on July 4th, 1776. Canada came into being on July 1st, 1867 as a member of the British Commonwealth. The USA was formed as a republic; Canada was based on the parliamentary system.
The friendship between the two countries extends back to before 1867 to the time when Canada was an outpost of the British Empire. The only blip between the two countries occurred in 1812 when a series of skirmishes took place after the USA attempted to invade its northern neighbor. This was known as the War of 1812. Neither side could declare victory. It was basically a draw.
In my opinion, Canada has always been a good friend and a good neighbor to the USA. The two countries have had their differences but this is not uncommon in close relationships. The United States and Canada enjoy the world’s most comprehensive trading relationship supporting millions of jobs on both sides of the border. In 2019 for example, the United States and Canada traded goods and services worth $725 billion, close to $2 billion per day.
