Now it's back to work to show the world that democracy does work, and demagoguery and skullduggery can be short-lived if the people speak loudly enough and enough good people act with courage and determination.

I am a Canadian and an immigrant. I hope my American cousins do not mind me providing a friendly commentary on the events of the last four years and in particular, the events of the last two and a half months and the last two weeks.

Four years ago, the USA’s electoral system elected a political neophyte to the highest office in the land. This man was elected on a wave of bigotry, skin color discrimination, right-wing politics, misogynism, isolationism, and fear. The USA and the world became a darker, gloomier place thanks to this false god. To the dispossessed, he was a god.

He promoted his brand of self-aggrandizement to those who felt left behind; the chronically unemployed, white nationalists, neo-nazis, the ill-informed, the believers in conspiracies, and he dragged US politics into the gutter. He went out of his way to alienate the country’s allies, allies who fought hand in hand with the USA in two world wars and in many smaller wars throughout the globe. He scoffed at the US trading partners and sucked up to and defended the nation's enemies, in particular Russia.
