Appeasement Is Not The Answer
We learned that lesson prior to World War II — didn't we?
Columnist Terry Glavin hit it out of the ballpark with his article “Pelosi’s Visit To Taiwan Anything But Reckless”. One would think the lesson would have been learned from the Second World War that appeasement does not work. The word is closely associated with then Prime Minister of Britain Neville Chamberlain who met with Hitler, co-signed an agreement and arrived back in the UK waving what turned out to be a useless “peace” document exclaiming “Peace In Our Time”. Appeasement has now been widely viewed as a policy of weakness.
When dealing with international thugs and murderers such as Xi Jinping, Valdimir Putin and Kim Jong Un who see themselves a tough guys but really are cowards at heart, strength and displaying power is all they understand. Anything less is weakness to them, They see Western leaders as weak-kneed pacifists.
Dealing with psychopaths is never easy. Standing up for democracy is never easy. Look at the United States.
Leaders of the world’s declining democratic countries must show strength and never back down. Wishful thinking gets us nowhere in the face of evil. The Taiwan situation is a powder keg as is Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. We must never forget that appeasement is not the lesser of two evils.
