From One Democracy To Another

Saddened, flabbergasted, and shocked.

Canada and the United States share the longest undefended border in the world. The two countries have been friends, supporters of each other, and trading partners since the inception of both countries; the US in 1776 and Canada as a British outpost before 1867 and a country after that date.

Both countries have joined forces in the fight against tyranny and hate in a number of wars including World War 1, World War II, the Korean War, and a number of different conflicts around the globe. The two nations are symbolically and more, brothers in arms. To Canadians, Americans have always been a people who embrace freedom of speech and liberty; who battle fascism, who are inventive, generous, creative and leaders of the world when it comes to assisting other people when disaster strikes their countries.

We don’t see Americans as thugs, weak-kneed rioters, gullible followers of a dictator with serious ego issues, and an inability to know truth from lies.

As a Canadian, I do not understand the deep divide between a certain percentage of the US population. Perhaps it is because the two-party system that has always existed in the US that creates a “black and white” or “us against them” mentality.
