Tell your story. (Spoiler alert! I don’t always take my own advice)

What hooks readers? Subject matter:

Very simply, something they can relate to. If you are into quantum physics and you want to expound on the subject, you will have a very specialized and small audience. If you can advise on 10 ways you have found to reduce your grocery bill, you have expanded your audience mightily.

Simplicity:

Keep your story or article simple and straightforward. Short, informative sentences and paragraphs. Write in everyday vernacular (language) and use everyday words. Back before the internet, Readers Digest was one of the most popular magazines on the market. Why? Short, interesting stories on everyday events kept the readers coming back.

Be inclusive:

Too much I, I, I, is irritating unless you are writing a story or article on how you beat cancer or lost weight. Readers like to feel included. I do.

Throw in some humor:

A short anecdote or some sneaky humor; something to get a chuckle out of your readers. Preferably an everyday event or happenstance that most people can…
