You have something that bugs you; maybe a political issue, or a human rights issue; maybe a relationship problem or you have a gripe about a local council matter, noisy neighbors. If it's itching you, bugging you, write about it.

Over my adult life, I have written dozens of letters to editors; written to airlines about damaged luggage, poor service at a gas station or a supermarket or such, and so on. I have also written about the good service I have received or about how impressed I am with a product I have bought.

There are two sides to every coin. I would say letters of complaint far outstrip letters providing complements. Just Googling this subject results in an extraordinary number of websites on how to write a letter of complaint but few on how to write a letter of praise. A number of studies have been carried out over the years on customer satisfaction. This one discovered an unhappy customer will tell an average of sixteen people about an issue they have had with a product or a service. On the flip side (of the coin) happy customers tell an average of nine people about their satisfaction.
