Some Of My Favorite Reading Is My 3-Year-Old Grandson’s Books

There is much to be learned by writers from reading children’s books.

One day a week, I look after my three-year-old grandson. He has a large collection of books and he and I spend a couple of hours on my grandson's sitting day with a selection from his bookshelf. I read and explain things and he listens, interjecting from time to time with questions or when he feels I need to be corrected when I misname something.

He soaks in information like a sponge, has an eagle eye for detail, and is gradually expanding his vocabulary, his recognition of words, and can now count to 15.

Being a boy, he loves books featuring construction machines, trucks, submarines, airplanes, trains and buses and mechanical objects. He is not so keen on books on nature and wildlife though he likes storybooks involving animals with human characteristics. My 2-year-old granddaughter is not that interested in mechanical things in spite of her father’s encouragement in buying her some toy trucks and cars.
