The Age Of Entitlement

Every generation blames the previous generation for the problems inherent in their age.

We in the western world are living in a dream-time. Food is plentiful though recent reports indicate around fifty percent of that produced is wasted. Consumer goods are literally falling out of the sky courtesy of Amazon. Life is good, particularly for those with money. Travel is cheap. Human rights are a non-issue to those that have them. Live for today and the hell with the environment is the catchphrase of many of the wealthy.

We are truly living in the age of entitlement — a consumer paradise, a society of cheap products where we “must-have” the latest iPhone, smartwatch or electronic gadget. Last year’s models will just not do. Young women walk around in jeans with holes in them, holes that are “custom made” for god’s sake and cost a fortune. Young men pay ridiculous prices for haircuts modeled on their favorite sports heroes. Young men and women lunch on $25 avocado sandwiches and display expensive tattoos that were once the domain of sailors and the uncouth.

Waste and consumerism are the order of the day. The evidence seems to support this attitude is generational. I know that I, being born…
