The whole idea of tipping has been lost. It began as an acknowledgment of service above the norm. It was not meant to offset a restaurant’ s payroll. If I get good service, I tip well. If I get lousy service, I don’t.
This idea of standing in line at a coffeehouse for 5–10 minutes and then be expected to tip for the privilege is BS. Why not carry that through to supermarket checkouts, gas stations where you fill your own car, lumberyards where you load your own goods?
There are some countries in the world, New Zealand comes to mind, where tipping is not expected and where restaurants pay their employee's livable wages. Why are servers, waiters, and bussers so special in the world of service? It's just a racket instigated by cheapskate owners.
