Things I Wish I’d Said

Before they left

He died suddenly, that cousin of mine
And a good friend to boot
Way before his time
And we left many things unsaid
Between us

He died suddenly, that father of mine
I didn’t know him so well
But he died before his time
And I left many things unsaid
Between us

She died suddenly, that ex-wife of mine
And I was far away
And hadn’t seen or talked to her
For years but still, I felt
I left many things unsaid

She died suddenly, that mother of mine
And I was far away
But each trip I made to her side
Was full of things we said
Between us

He died at his time, one hundred and two
That beloved godfather of mine
And I was far away
But we did not leave
With things unsaid
Between us
