I cannot stand the taste of cilantro. I have tried it a number of times and find it disgusting. It tastes very similar to soap. You are probably asking yourself around now: “How does he know it tastes like soap? Who eats soap?”

The answer to that goes back to when I was a kid. My mother smeared soap on my tongue after I uttered what she called a vulgar word. I have never forgotten the taste.

If there is a microscopic bit of cilantro in a dish, I can detect it. It seems I am a member of a group called “super-tasters.” What is a super-taster?

The answer to that question lies in one's taste buds.

According to the Scientific American website, the number of taste buds varies from person to person. People who have more taste buds than the general population are called “supertasters”. To supertasters, foods tend to have much stronger flavors, which leads to supertasters having very strong likes…
